Designing With The End In Mind: Durability, Resilience and Risk in Roofing
North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, GAF, is committed to innovation, community, and sustainability. More homes and businesses in our country are protected by a GAF roof than by any other product.
In the Commercial Roofing sector, GAF provides a wide range of product offerings including single-ply membranes, roof coatings, asphalt, insulation, and more. In addition, GAF provides professional training for the entire roofing industry. Roofing Dynamics was a proud attendee at their latest Building & Roofing Science Workshop, Designing With The End In Mind: Durability, Resilience and Risk in Roofing.
The Building & Roofing Science Workshop, Designing With The End In Mind: Durability, Resilience and Risk in Roofing, focused on the impact of design choices in the commercial roofing design process. Throughout the workshop, attendees were provided with product knowledge along with hand-on experience to better understand the impact of how early design choices carry through an entire roofing project.
Workshop Learning Objectives:
- Understand the role of roof system selection and detailing on the overall performance of the roof assembly.
- Collaborate as teams to explore low-slope roof system selection through the use of interactive scenarios.
- Build the knowledge necessary to make design decisions about the roof assembly at the optimum time in the design process.
- Learn to detail robust interfaces, specifically parapet or rising wall details where the roof and wall assemblies meet to facilitate high performance design.
- Understand the impact of changes made during the value engineering process on the performance of a low-slope roof assembly
Commercial Roofing Design Workshop Facilitates Hand-On Experience for Attendees
During the Interactive Design Challenge, four different groups got together to strategize the best roofing solution for their mock customer. After reviewing the roof issues and problem solving, details of the roof system were recommended by the majority.
Understanding the specific needs of your roof and building is key part to a successful project. Attendees discovered the differences between silicone and acrylic while getting hands-on with roof coatings and liquid membranes.
Exploring the importance of edge metal options when designing a roof system. Edge metal is a very important part of the roof design and can cause roof failure if the wrong choice is made.
The teams discussed the pros and cons of tapered insulation.
A probe can be a tool to test for a good weld but should not be the only way to test for one as it can be deceptive.
Learning options for heat welding thermoplastics when it comes to corners and penetrations.
During the discussion of welding on single ply thermoplastic membranes, attendees studied the aspects of heat welder temperature, successful and unsuccessful welds, and the effect weather has on heat welding. Also demonstrated was difference between TPO and PVC when it comes to welding and technique.
Here, the group is discussing various techniques for edge details.
